October 2010 Alliance Launch

On October 18th, 2010, the Chama Peak Land Alliance, a visionary, bold, and proactive group of 14 conservation-minded private landowners, came together to publically launch their commitment to reach across traditional property boundaries and address common land management issues in the southern San Juan Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. Our goal was to keep this unique region intact and economically viable through long-term enhancement to the ecosystem and its wildlife.

The Chama Peak area offers exceptional scenery, a rich cultural heritage and a biologically diverse natural landscape, which provides critical ecosystem services and serves as a foundation for economic stability. It also, unfortunately, is exposed to many threats and challenges including fragmentation, rural lifestyle changes, habitat loss, population pressures, poorly planned energy development, and economic uncertainty. Protecting this working landscape can serve as a model for much of the rest of the country.
